Born in 1961
A saxophone tenor, composer, leader of a big-band and jazz producer. Since the beginning of 1990s Igor has been the most interesting personality of Russain jazz.
He was a graduate of Leningrad music secondary school (1981) and a student of a saxophonist Gennadiy Goldshtain. Igor took part in the jazz ensemble of David Goloschyokin (1880-1981), was a soloist of the big-band of Oleg Lundstrem (1981-1983), a leader of an own quintet (1983-1985), and a participant of the jazz group “Allegro” (1984-1987).
Igor has graduated from the famous Berkley school in Boston, USA (1987). Since 1988 he had been constantly living in the USA. His “American period” began with a collaboration with a saxophonist Grover Washington. Butman’s partners in the USA were well-known musicians - Charlie Haden, Lenny White, Eddie Gomez, Randy Brecker and many others.
In 1996 Igor returned to Russia. He became an art-director of the most considerable jazz club “Le Club”, created a TV project “Jazzofrenia” and became the head of several prestigious international jazz festivals in Moscow. Thanks to his authority Moscow is often visited by the stars of jazz from the USA, Europe and Japan. Butman is a leader of his own big-band created from the best young Russian jazzmen (1999). Time and again he has received the titles of “The Musician of the Year” in Russia.
