A pianist, keyboard player, composer, arranger and teacher, one of the most famous jazz musicians of Ukraine. Evgen was one of the founders of Ukrainian jazz. He worked as an arranger in such orchestras as “Dnipro”, “Anthey”, “Little Green Light”, was a conductor of Eddie Rozner’s big band (1957-1958), an active figure and participator of concerts and “jams“ by Kyiv jazz club “Mria” (the Dream, 1962-1963), a leader of numerous jazz ensembles. Evgen was a laureate of jazz festivals “Jazz Jamboree Junior” in Poland (1969), “A youth jazz forum” in Bulgaria (1989), “Darmstadt Jazz Fest” in Germany (1993). Also he was a participator and constant participator of jazz festivals in Kriviy Rig, Donetsk, Kyiv, Sumy, Cherkassy, Uzghorod, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk. He was an author of more than 2000 arrangements performed by ensembles of Oleg Lundstrem, Anatoliy Kroll, Kostyantyn Obelyan, Mark Reznitskiy and many others. Evgen collaborated with trumpet players Larry Basket (1994-1995) and Valeriy Kolesnikov. On the “Slavic Bazaar in Kiev” (1999) festival he accompanied a performance of a female jazz singer Valentina Ponomaryova. On the jazz department of Kiev musical secondary school named by Glier Evgen was teaching piano playing, composing and improvising, and had a number of talented students. He has created music for numerous movies and documentaries, cartoons and theatrical performances. In recent years he had been playing in a jazz ensemble “KPD” (KJT, Kyiv Jazz Teachers), making arrangments for Kyiv Saxophonists’ quartet together with Yuhim Markov (bass-guitar) and Vitaliy Machulin (drums), collaborating with a female vocal quintet “Beauty Band”.
Evgen Dergunov is an author of famous jazz pieces “I like to Swing”, “Forgiveness”, “My Dog”, “Autumn Blues”. Discography:
