Born in 1954
A jack of all trades in performing, masters a big amount of music instrumentals. Oleksandr is likely to be the most famous representative of Ukrainian jazz underground and modern improvisational music. He performs on bass-guitar, MIDI-guitar, grand piano, vibraphone, percussion, bassoon and contrabass. Oleksandr began his career as a bass-guitarist. He performed in a jazz-rock group “Videojazz”, popular in the USSR (1985-1988). In the beginning of 1990s Oleksandr changed his attitude to music and began a new creative stage. Improvisation became the main theme of his creative work. The first step towards this innovation was Aleksandr’s participation in a music quintet with Genadiy Ivchenko, Emil’ Sokolov (saxophones), Sergiy Shvirst (drums) and Sergiy Khmelyov (vibraphone).
He was a leader of “The Modern Music Group” (1988) which united Petro Tovstukha (piano), Yuriy Yaremchuk (saxophones), Iryna Finish (violoncello) and Myhaylo Antonovych. Oleksandr collaborated with Kyiv “Theatre of drama and comedy” (1989) and participated in a Ukraine-France jazz festival “Dniprogastrol” (1991) which resulted in interesting acquaintance with the performers of the “ARFI” association from Lion, France. Also he is a participant of jazz festivals and forums devoted to modern music in Ukraine and abroad. Since 1995 Aleksandr has been mostly working with solo projects and creating musical explications of old movies. He collaborates with a folklore ensemble “Drevo”, Sergiy Khmelyov and Yuriy Yaremchuk. They were exactly the ones whom Aleksands created one of his best works with – the program named “X-rayed Sounds” devoted to the Chornobyl tragedy (2001).
One of the latest programmes by Oleksandr Nesterov is dedicated to John Kage.
